Over ten thousand people turned up for Dublin Pride on the 25th of June 2016 to support the LGBTQ Community & celebrate diversity. The theme for this year was ‘Rebel Rebel’, honouring the historic events of the 1916 rising, but also in a tribute to David Bowie. LGBT Pride is an international event which is about celebrating and remembering the Stonewall riots of 1969 in New York, where LGBT people fought back against police repression and pushed forward their struggle against oppression.
Last year Ballyfermot Traveller Action Project submitted a motion to the Irish Traveller Movement, that:
“All member groups support and get involved in PRIDE through attending the annual parade, bringing along the groups banners and encouraging each group to be as creative as possible in a day of celebrating diversity and equality in our society”.
A coalition of Traveller and Roma representative groups got together to form the LGBT Traveller and Roma space on the Pride parade. The banner leading the group read: “Proud of our Ethnicity and Identities”. Altogether about 70 people from the Traveller Community and support networks turned out to take part.
