New wave synth pop band Dash! have collaborated with fine art photographer Ishmael Claxton to produce a set of images with surreal and dramatic impact. The collaboration transpired while filming the music video for the band’s debut single Luas directed by Paul Duane.
Dash! hail from “Space Place” (-!=⊕Λ), landing on Earth in 2023 they quickly became regulars on Dublin’s DIY music scene. Their high-octane live shows, skilful song writing, and catchy lyrics have earned them a growing fan base.
Claxton is a fine art photographer with a background in maths, art history, set and costume design, all of which equip him to weave these elements together to give form to his vision. With an eye for surrealism and pop art, he prefers to implement his creativity at source rather than in post production. Using a mixture of analogue and digital cameras with a prism lense he produced an impressive series of images with Dash! taken across two locations while shooting the music video.
New Yorker Claxton, now based in Ireland, has exhibited widely, both in Ireland and internationally. In 2023 his work was included in a record-breaking 39 exhibitions in Ireland, The Netherlands, Canada and the US. That year his portrait of artist Seán Hillen was also selected for the LensCulture Portrait Choice Awards. Currently artist-in-residence at The Photo Museum of Ireland, he continues to exhibit prolifically and has been shortlisted for several prestigious awards. As a co-founder of the ÍOVA Club Claxton has been instrumental in shaping Ireland’s photography community.
With a new track on the way next month, Dash! are ones to watch.
