Services can be provided in person or by telemedicine. Outpatient services must meet the components of ASAM Level 1.0 services and staffing needs as follows: Many states across the country use ASAM criteria as the basis for their efforts to improve the addiction treatment system. Treatment plans for adolescents and adults are developed through a multidimensional assessment of patients at five major levels of treatment based on the level of direct medical treatment, structure, safety and intensity of treatment services provided. For more information on ASAM Level 1 treatment or other programs offered by the American Society of Addiction Medicine, click here. The multidimensional assessment of the asam criteria based on strengths takes into account a patient`s needs, obstacles and liabilities, as well as their strengths, assets, resources and support structure. This information is used to determine the appropriate level of care in a continuum. They may be recommended for short-term asam level 1 treatment (6 to 12 weeks) or long-term asam level 1 treatment (7+).

The course includes at least 2 drug tests, as well as an additional meeting required outside of the ASAM 1 group (e.g., AA, NA, or Celebrate Recovery). A multidimensional assessment must (i) be used, (ii) documented to determine whether a person meets the criteria for medical necessity, and (iii) includes the assessment or analysis of substance use disorders, the diagnosis of substance use disorder, and the assessment of treatment needs to provide medically necessary services. Multidimensional assessment includes, if necessary, a physical examination and laboratory tests necessary for the treatment of substance use disorders. The ASAM criteria provide a common language for assessing patient needs and describe the continuum of treatment settings for addiction treatment. With the ASAM criteria, managed care organizations can easily work with treatment providers to ensure that plan members receive the treatment that best meets their needs and that resources are used wisely.
